Has anyone seen Shutter Island already? I haven’t, didn’t have time for going to the cinema lately but a friend of mine has and he said it was an interesting movie. I have been reading a lot of reviews on newspapers and magazines and in an overal I think the feedback is positive, but I would like to hear your opinions.

It’s my birthday next week so I’ll probably go see the movie on that day :)

“Shutter Island” is a psychological suspense thriller set in 1954. To suggest the proper tone for his actors, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Ben Kinsgley and Michelle Williams, Scorsese held regular evening screenings of classic noir and psycho-dramas from the late 1940s and early 1950s, such as “Laura,” “Crossfire,” “Out of the Past,” “Time Limit,” and “On Dangerous Ground.”

Then he sprinkled in horror flicks like “The Haunting,” “The Innocents,” and “The Seventh Victim.”

“We watched quite a few films from that period, talking about the style, about the way a detective works,” said Ruffalo on the phone from New York. “They had that hard-boiled quality, especially Robert Mitchum in ‘Out of the Past.’ ”

Ruffalo said the cast benefited from a nearly three-week rehearsal period, which is rare. “It was very collaborative. We had these long discussions really breaking down the story, and we were watching all these films. So not only was it a great rehearsal period, it was our own little film school with Marty.”

Ruffalo plays Chuck Aule, partner of DiCaprio’s U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels. The duo lands on Shutter Island, home to a hospital-prison for the criminally insane, to investigate the disappearance of a patient. They have to work their way through a maze of weird doings, guards and doctors (led by Kingsley and Max Von Sydow), and in the course of the investigation Daniels unearths some psychological skeletons of his own.

“Shutter Island,” based on the novel by Dennis Lehane (“Mystic River”), includes several plot zingers that we won’t reveal here. It opens nationwide Friday, February 19.

This Shutter Island decision is now the second major studio pic to jump from fall 2009 to February 2010 (after Universal’s The Wolfman recently moved off November). But Paramount’s adaptation of the Dennis Lehane novel directed by Marty Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio looked entrenched for October 2nd and this coming awards season. For godsakes, the pic is already on people’s Oscar list. Such a surprise delay is just going to compound all the buzz surrounding the picture and its great trailer released in June. An insider tells me. “It tested in the high 80s/low 90s and Scorsese even brought it down to 2 hours.” So what’s the problem? I hear that Paramount told the filmmakers it doesn’t have the financing in 2009 to spend the $50M to $60M necessary to market a big awards pic like this. (“Given where the DVD business is in 2009, our only hope is the economy and the retail business rebounds in 2010 because the hardest hit segment has been movies that play to an older adult audince,” a studio source tells me.) So the studio settled on the release date of mid-February because “that’s when Silence Of The Lambs came out” back in 1991 and it won the Oscar. “Now that the Academy has Best Picture to 10 films,” an insider notes to me, “it will be easier for a movie that came out in the beginning of the year to get nominated for Best Picture.”

Mark Ruffalo Promises ‘Ashecliffe’ Will Rank Among Martin Scorsese’s Best

Saying that a man who directed “Raging Bull,” “Taxi Driver,” “The Last Temptation of Christ,” “The Departed,” and many more has helmed some great films isn’t exactly stepping out onto a ledge. Saying that that very same man’s best work is in front of him? Now we’re talking!

Martin Scorsese’s “Shutter Island,” (or “Ashecliffe,” we’re not exactly sure) is shaping up to be one of the famed director’s best, co-star Mark Ruffalo said.

“It is Martin Scorsese’s playground with this movie. He gets to do everything he loves about film,” Ruffalo insisted. “He does noir, fantasy sequences, dream sequences, madness, suspense, tough urban stuff. It’s absolute madness and twist upon twist. This could be one of his great films.”

The film, based on a book by “Mystic River” and “Gone Baby Gone” author Dennis Lehane follows two US Marshalls (Ruffalo and Leonardo DiCaprio) and their investigation into the disappearance of a mental patient from a Massachusetts asylum.

Anybody who has read the book, however, (as I have since my last article about the film, when I was unable to figure out which role Patricia Clarkson would play) could tell you that the film is about so much more than the basic plotline sketches at. Ruffalo, like me, would rather some of that remain a mystery, the actor only going so far as to say that it’s “so much bigger.”

So what does Ruffalo call the recent Oscar winner on set?

“You sort of go Mr. Scorsese, Mr. Scorsese, Mr. Scorsese,” the thesp laughed, “but at some point after day 60, you’re like ‘hey Marty!’”

And what does he say? Please and thank-you, that’s what.
